This railway line can be described as an international connection between two countries with the character of a slow train. From Kempten in the Allgau with the Ausserfernbahn along Reutte to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Tirol and then with the Karwendelbahn to Innsbruck. It goes from the foot to the middle of the Alps, with the added bonus of a train ride to the highest peak in Germany, the Zugspitze.

Even though the peaks are not that high, the journey from Offenburg to Konstanz on Lake Constance is particularly surprising due to the great variation of the landscape through which the train winds through.
